Big Brother 2013 Racism: They Don’t Represent The Future (VIDEO)
|This season of Big Brother 2013 has been filled with racists, homophobic and misogynistic comments from the majority of the HouseGuests on Big Brother 15. Believe me, I have seen them and heard about them from all of you, so I know we are not happy about it. It seems like Aaryn Gries was put up as the poster child for this season and the remarks, but they came from most of them and it has a lot of people questioning the future of our country, since this season was filled with a cast of younger people. Well, I bring you the Cheerios commercial and hope for our future generations. Watch it below in my Big Brother 2013 spoilers.
This post is not about what the HGs did or did not say. This post is about a Cheerios commercial that caused a lot of controversy and controversy that made no sense to anyone with a brain that works. Let’s look at the commercial first:

Seems cute and nothing wrong with it, right? Nope! A lot of people found it appalling and disgusting, but then this group showed it to kids and got their reactions to that same commercial that had adults in an uproar. Their reactions are adorable and beyond cute! For this, it gives me hope that the cast of Big Brother 2013 does not represent the future of our country and these kids do.
Check it out here and tell me what you think. I think it is so inspiring:

cheerios – big brother – and the uneducated simple minded comments made about our new fabulous Miss America do not shape my opinion or how I treat people ….. bacteria is the only culture some people have and Big Brother exemplified that this season. They are not the type of people I would be friends with – hire – or want to represent the majority of Americans. Because if they did – you would not have been slammed with millions of “OMG – how disgusting….” emails about their behavior.
The comments made by the BB HG’s were not all about race, in fact I thought the racists comments were mild, not taken lightly but still no where near the inexcusable disgusting pornographic comments made by the F3 house guests made regarding one other evicted HG in particular. There is no comparison, the racist comments were something anyone might have heard in the past 100 years. What worries me most is CBS has shown no regard for the taunting of a white woman, and has not even acknowledged it has happened, but could not wait for Aaryn to be evicted so they could admonish her in national TV. Bet CBS says nothing to the F3 about their antics in front of a live TV audience.
Very true Alyce, the bashing last night was too much and I again turned off the TV…Makes me angry that I paid for live feeds that I will not watch because the content is so negative.
This just shows the ignorance of the F3. They have nothing better to do than continue to bash the other players. I also blame CBS for a lot of this as it seems some of this looks suspiciously scripted it you really follow it. The whole walk down Memory Lane night before last when GM, asked how many more and how much time did they have to complete it. Can’t wait for the premier of Survivor….almost don’t want to watch the finale of this.
I am so with you. I had to turn it every night this week. Sick language downgrading other house guests. I can not believe how filthy the 3 remaining are. They are the worst of the worst. I will not watch again if it is this way next year. Not worth my time, money or sleep. Makes me sick!
I agree. Well said Alyce. All I’ve been hearing is people can only remember what Aaryn said which she apologized more than once, people seem to forget but what about the rest of the BB HG’s we haven’t heard repeated comments about them. The way Spencer has been talking is so disgusting but then someone has to bring up Aaryn’s actions up again & again, geez people. Over it & done.
CJ: where have you been, we have done no-thing but hammer the F3 for days about there actions and comments!!!
Chris, I’ve been around, where have you been when I was around, huh. I was just making a point so don’t bash me. I haven’t made a comment for awhile because I’ve been sick with my kidneys what’s your excuse. Us commentary people support each other not make wise cracks about another commentary. And about hammering the F3 I’m with you all the way, they are pathetic people but I also find some good in them as well as I do you. Looks like everyone below you was commenting on the same thing as I was.
i feel the same way , i couldn’t believe what i was hearing come out of their mouths. Andy has not shut up since it’s been them threenow the real Andy comes out ugh
i see the REAL Andy is a real bad person . I was always hAPPY FOR FINALY NIGHT Well not this year it’s to bad that one of these three mean people will win. i hope they called them all
I love watching this. I was appalled by the negative comments when the commercial aired. I have mixed race grandchildren and am shocked by comments that have been made where they live in the south. My family is very racist and it bothers me. I refuse to listen or join in conversations that are racist and I will tell them how I feel. I think that by allowing such talk around you is giving permission to the people who make these comments. I hope that our future generations do what is right.
I cried at the end of the last comment from the teenage girl abouthow hurtful it was. It seems a long time ago but their were many comments against each other from minorities. Blacks and whites separated by choice in certain parts of the country. It seems over time that it got better. I have seen best friends (one is white, the other black) The list goes on and I believe the majority of Americans are better than this. I remember hearing about the commercial and when I finally saw it, it was sweer and I thought what’s the fuss? This is America we have hundreds of different minorities and religions!
The houseguests on BB 15 are disgusting about other races and the comments on Elissa and the others I don’t get that. They are vile!!!
I love the comments of the children I can not believe in our society that they find this offensive its a normal family of today I wish they would open their eyes and close their mouths thank you for posting this our children our are future
I liked the commercial, then others made it racial. What is our world coming too.
Our world is changing and people can’t see/accept that. Families aren’t what they were during Leave it to Beaver and Eight is Enough. This commercial represents real life and the kids see that and I love that!
That was a beautiful response from those children.
Thank you Todd for sharing!
There is hope! 🙂
That’s all I was trying to show. Many people have said if BB15 is the representation of out future than we are screwed. These kids are the real definition of our future. A future where none of these issues matter. You have gay uncles, African American neighbors, biracial teachers and so on.
Kids are usually very accepting. I have found however, that it is at the High School level (and some Middle School) where popularity and cliques become all important where the problems become solidified, and negative lasting judgements are made.
As a fan of BB AND Cherrios, i see this season as a tempest in a teapot. It was bad but doesn’t represent the human condition by a long shot. We’ve come a long way baby (and still have far to go) but the journey has begun. IMO, the adults that roared the loudest about the Cheerios commercial were in the minority in their thinking. Cheerios target audience for that commercial was “families”. The structure and face of families today has changed dramatically. And for the better. Those that think and act like this years HGs (and the adult voices protesting Cheerios) will be going the way of the dinosaur eventually. A few more years and they will be virtually extinct. There’s always some straglers. Intent on keeping things the way they’ve always been. I have 3 words for them – Resistance is futile. So are the HGs of BB 15 the future? Nope. But i’m actually glad BB missed the mark this year and revealed something that was meaningful that we as a society need to fix. Will racism ever be completely erased? Probably not. But i do suspect with our tenacity and teaching that in future at least 95% of us will believe that the only place for a white sheet is on the bed. And that a cross will become flame resistant.
Cat, what do/did you do for a living? You have a great way with words and it is impressive!
You as well Todd – what do/did you do for a living?
Lol..Thanks Todd! I’ve dealt with the public my whole life. I once owned and operated a hotel. Saw many different types come through. The haves AND have nots. And they all have a story to tell. So i figured out something long ago – you treat them all the same. Whether a king or a peasant, i’ll do my best for you. Truthfully, we all want the same thing out of life. Our life to mean something and a soft place to fall when it doesn’t. And i tried to make my clients feel like theirs did (i’m a good listener :)). I’ve heard some inspirational stories, and some devastating ones and it teaches you to judge your words carefully. The difference between inspiring or destroying someone or something might be the next word out of your mouth.
I’ve done some writing in the past for various outlets but nothing of significance.
That is so awesome Cat and so very true!
Mary, this is what I do. I have a long story/history in life and had my ups and downs, but I finally received my Bachelors degree with a double major in Broadcasting and Journalism and now I a writer for reality TV for a few sites. Love my job, but this site and the readers make me so much more appreciative for what I do.
Todd, we can all tell how much you love your job…THAT IS AWESOME, We have the best y’all…and that is Todd
Cat: Love your comments, I too feel that you should treat people the same way you want to be treated, I grew up on a working farm, Life wasn’t EZ, but I learned that you got out of life what you put in to it, I joined the Marines in 1967 and have traveled the world and I found that people will treat you nice if you treat them the same way, Children laugh and play just like children all around the world, There will always be that small percent no matter what that will find something to say bad about something and adorable as the cherrios commercial, this I’m afraid well never stop, I do have hopes for the future, God gets us all gift’s and it is up to us to see them and use them in the right way, I guess some people are blind and always will be
Todd,Isn’t she brilliant!!! Thank you Cat!! and Thank you Todd!!
I remember this commercial. I don’t personally have any obviously mixed-race (aren’t we ALL a bit mixed-race?) couples in my immediate family. But I was pleased that, when I heard about the controversy, I had to go back and watch the commercial. I hadn’t even noticed it the first time. Thought it was a very touching commercial.
The little girl is adorable—-pouring Cherrios on her dad. What is sad their our people who keep throwing gas into the fire and start the racist poop!!!!!!
I was totally in the same boat. I was like the kids, this is just a Cheerios commercial that is humorous. It wasn’t until I read that people had issues with the commercial that it hit me what the negativity could stem from. I agree with the kids that I’m glad the company had the courage to continue forward with this commercial. By now, it should not be something out of the norm.
Nothing wrong with the commercial. I don’t care if you family is pink with purple polka dots. The question is, that no matter the color if your skin, hopefully your parents will teach you to treat people the way you would want to be treated. God forbid that someday you will grow up and be on reality TV and the world will get to see exactly what your parents taught you. Whether you were taught to be a racist, or to believe in your faith, to be a porn star, or just that you were taught to be a disgusting human being. I think a lot of people care about what they have seen and heard out of this years cast, but to afraid to stand up for their right to say what they believe.
Pauley Perrette from NCIS (lover her!) was just on The talk. She is a huge fan of BB and wants Spencer to win. Just FYI
Mary, not defending her but by chance if she had not watched any after dark or gone on to read any of the blogs she may be unaware of the dirty bird that he is. His on air portrayal is a far cry from what we are seeing on BBAD. You never know…
I just wish CBS would have instantly pulled those players out, and figured out some sort of replacement. It would not have taken much for the rest to get themselves together. These people did not just have a one or two comments, and I truly believe we should see all the good and bad of people with the exception of racism and child molestation. Am I taking it too far? I don’t think so, I truly don’t care if Spencer was joking, that is one place no one should go. And Ginamarie talks bad about lots of races. And then there is Andy, everybody, gay or straight should be disgusted by him. I have not always “liked” who won BB, but none the less I watched it till the end. I will see who won and watch for interviews from former houseguests, but as far as who wins-I don’t care, none of them have earned this win and I hope next season has a better group of houseguests!!
Thanks, Todd.
I remember seeing this commercial a couple of times when it first came out, and I can honestly say that I didn’t even notice that there were interracial parents. When I first heard about the uproar I watched it again, but I can’t see what the problem is. In todays society we have all sorts of relations involved, Race , religion and ethnic background. I say “Get over it people, life is too short”.
I am a teacher at a Catholic School, mostly white. For two different Thanksgiving pageants Abraham Lincoln was portrait by black boy. NOBODY in my class questioned the choice. They didn’t say a word. It didn’t seem out of the ordinary. I kept my mouth shut and on we went into church. NOBODY in church said anything either. I was very proud.
I love the Cheerios commercial. I also have mixed family members. In this respect the kids have it right:) As for BB15-be done, PLease!!!!
I’m not going to lie and say that when I first saw this commercial it threw me back alittle but not because I look at it negatively but because it was just something you don’t see on TV. The couples most often shown on TV are of the same race. Been that way for years. And I’m used to seeing racially ambiguous Black girls because for some reason showing anything else is just not done. So when I saw the little girl I just knew it was just another racially ambiguous Black girl but both her parents were going to be Black. When they showed the mom I had to rewind a few times to make sure I saw right. I think it’s great for a few reasons: 1. It shows we are getting somewhere in this world where racism sadly still exists, 2. It gives those girls who are of mixed race/heritage someone they can identify with on TV, 3. It’s just a cute commercial all around. I hope more people start to follow suite. Maybe we’ll even start to see some Middle Eastern people on TV (outside of the culturally embarrassing Shahs of Sunset and Kardashians) or a serious show with a gay/lesbian lead couple (not just a sitcom). Gives me hope that as a society we’ve progressed.
As I said in a post sometime ago, we will really have reached a high point in race relations when we can dislike someone of a different race without being called a racist–in other words, we like them or dislike them based upon their character and not the color of their skin. I am white but there are a whole lot of white folks I do not like (most of the HGs this season would certainly fit in that category!) so doesn’t it make sense that there might be some black or any other color folks I don’t like–it does if I am basing it upon character and not skin color or ethnic group. And those of us white folk who are from the deep south are often the victims of prejudice (which means to “pre-judge”) when it is assumed that all of us are racists who hate black people. And that has happened to me even though, for some reason, race was never what determined whether I liked someone or not. And if you are southern and comment that some of your best friends are black, so many pre-judging people will say, “Oh, sure they are! Do you expect me to believe that.” Well, the truth is some of my best friends ARE black and my very best friend is Mexican. And in grad school, two of my roommates were Chinese. Why I even have friends who are YANKEES!! 😉
I guess what I am trying to say is to please not stereotype people on the basis of their race, ethnic group, level of education, what part of the country they are from, etc. etc. Only their character is important–every race and group has its rotten apples as well as its golden apples. And I do have to throw in that I have met some true-blue racists who are from north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Some of them will admit they have really never had much contact with other races.
BTW, I don’t have a heavy southern accent even though many members of my extended family do but that doesn’t make me better or worse than they are. That’s another factor that causes pre-judgment. I am reminded of one of my graduate school professors who was Hispanic from New Mexico–he said that “accents are beautiful as long as they don’t become something to hang prejudices on.”
OK, I will step down off my soapbox.
And one final thing–I love that commercial, loved it the first time I saw it and still watch it whenever it comes on–that child is adorable!
Well said, Tessa. As a fellow southerner, I agree with every word (except I didn’t have two Chinese college roommates 🙂 ).
LOL, Lilly! Thank you. BTW, I haven’t been feeling too much love from some of the folks here in Texas who didn’t like the way that football game turned out–can’t imagine why not–I thought it turned out great! RTR!!
Yea, Tessa, sorry about that…. You know what they’re saying here? “Johnny be good … but Bama be better!!” RTR!!! 😀
Yes, I used that yesterday at church and today at my substitute assignment–I actually got a few laughs. Happy I could do something to cheer them up!
Tessa, You stay right where you are and tell it like it! Well said, Thank you!!!
Thank you, Joycelyne! I am old so I try to tell it as I see it these days, and I so tired of people stereotyping any person or group of people, whether it’s based on race, on what section of the country they live in, what level of education they have, etc. I mentioned in another post about having class that my little grandmother was poor in material things, didn’t have much book learnin’ but she was the sweetest, most caring person I have ever known.
I try very hard to judge people on their character and how they treat other people–I don’t do that perfectly by any means but I hope I never give up trying. There are people in my life that I pre-judged but after getting to really know them, found out that my pre-judgment was so wrong.
Tessa, Sounds to me like your dear grandmother was kind and wonderful woman who left a lasting and positive impression on you, You sound like a very wise lady! don’t ever stop trying to see the best in people, and most of never stop telling it like it is. Thank you Tessa!
Thanks Todd for posting this!!! I teach ESL, and have worked with so many nationalities. Today, my 4th graders were learning about Martin Luther King and in their primary classroom and Thurgood Marshall in mine. We had to discuss segregation, racism etc. It’s amazing how accepting kids are and do not understand why people are mean. One of the kids in this video says, “I thought Martin Luther King fixed this already.” That pretty much sums up how my kids felt today. Kids are wonderful!!!
I totally didn’t understand what the controversy could be when I first watched the commercial. Of course, being from a mixed raced family it didn’t seem abnormal to me. It was devastatingly disappointing to see how people continue to respond negatively something that is not only natural but reflective of the world today. I loved the responses of the children, these are the kids that need to motivate the masses!
As for BB, I am completely disgusted and disappointed in this season. The bullying and ignorance of everyone needs to be called out. It seems the prime targets were the ones not part of their demoralizing. It would be great to have a discussion panel of the house guests being confronted by not only Julie but the public for things they have said and done and to hear their reasoning and explanations (not that there are any that could validate their actions!). Such a disappointing season 🙁
I agree Joelene, and being from Texas? It’s embarrassing that we have so many goobers in this State. I quit watching BB after McCrae was voted out. Andy is the one that makes me ill. All he does is pace, and talk trash about everyone! He such a little creep!
Franny, I think 3 of them were from Texas and, I agree they were all super-goobers and embarrassing to the rest of us. I know lots of wonderful people that would have been great representatives for our state–too bad they weren’t selected.
Hello? If you asked Aaryn Gries what she thought of a mixed couple, she would say the same things those kids are saying, if she was being asked her opinion publicly. She knows what is the right thing to say to be PC. All people start off totally unprejudiced. Prejudice is a LEARNED trait. If the parents/society did not give some kind of acceptance or approval when these kind of comments were first made, people will stop saying them. It starts off as a childish comment. A person gets mad at someone and criticizes their hair, etc., instead of the fact that the other person made them feel stupid or caught them cheating or something. It is an excuse to dislike someone when there is no good excuse.
Some people can only feel good about themselves if they put someone else down. I think this was definitely the case with several of the HGs this session. Candice and Elissa were probably the biggest targets but there was so much trash talk about so many people.
