Big Brother 2013 Spoilers: Finale – Aaryn Gries Interview (VIDEO)
|One of the most controversial HouseGuests from Big Brother 2013 had to be Aaryn Gries and all the racial comments she made this season. Knock her all you want, but she also was a strong competitor and tied the record for most HoH wins during Big Brother 15. She was the youngest HG this season and we have the interview with Jeff Schroeder after the Big Brother 15 finale this week. Check it out below in my Big Brother 2013 spoilers.
We all know about the crazy bed-flipping incident during the season and the hatred that spewed between her and Candice Stewart. They talked about mending fences and getting along the best in the jury house? Is that for real??? Well, from this interview it appears to be true.
I’m not going to lie: I was not a huge fan of Aaryn’s during Big Brother 2013 at the beginning and then she got better as the season went on and seeing this interview makes me almost want to like her. I think she was being young and stupid and felt the pressure of the game early on. She said stupid things and seems to own up to them. I think she is sincere when she talks and I actually think she will learn from this situation. Call me crazy, but I want to see her come back and compete under different terms and see how strong she is in the game and not bow down to whatever McCranda tell her to do! And the parting gift from Jeff is awesome!

Shut up Aaron you suck! Age has nothing to do with being a racist. Aaron was raised to be racist. by her racist parents
I think age has a lot to do with this situation. Yes, we are raised a certain way and that may have been the way she was raised. However, she is young and growing still and maybe if we give her time to mature she will not act in those ways and say those type of things? If she takes this as a learning experience, I think she can change her ways and her way of talking. I truly believe she will become a better person because of her time on BB.
I agree, Todd, and isn’t that what we’d all like? For everyone to always be growing, changing, improving?
Yes I agree with Lily and Todd. She has been given a gift and she seems to want to change because of it. We should give her a chance and not discriminate against her because that is the lesson.
She’s not there 100% yet ( better person), but if she keeps using her time in the house as a learning tool, she may just get there. She was too immature to be in the house in the 1st place & she succumbed to peer pressure, but for those reasons she needed to be there for growth. She was a strong competitor & I would like to see her back. I,m just about 100% we’d see a new & improved Aaryn
Tessa, unfortunately she has used that excuse several times in fact, if you look at her interviews that’s all she keeps on repeating ‘ i didn’t realise people took it soo seriously” , and ” i apologise for anything i said to offend anyone, it was taken out of context”. I share your hope that she changes and learns, im just not sure she even understands the depth of her actions yet.
Im soo sorry this post was a mistake it was supposed to he a reply to the next one, not sure how to delete it? My apologies!

Sorry for my mistake in the post above. I was meaning to post a question then don’t know what happened, sometimes the phone can be tricky lol.
My question is regarding the age issue; i have read it almost everywhere, whether on here or other sites. However i’m not sure i quite get it so i was wondering if someone can explain it. I’m 26 yrs old and the way i see things is that my generation, and those after us, and even before us, have grown up in a different world, one of globalization and social media, i mean globalization is at a stage where its almost like it feels the world has gotten smaller, and because of all of the above, i would’ve thought that, these generations are more aware of the diversity in people and their backgrounds, ie its more normal and accepted than before, therefore i would’ve thought their tolerance would be different to their parents’ and grandparents’ generations. Back then slavery still exited and racism all over the world was more because societies weren’t as integrated and diverse as they are now and so back then it was more of a big deal to see a black person in your neighborhood or a lady with a headscarf on your streets, anything different or ‘foreign’ is always hard for people to accept, which i think is the route of racism(along with misplaced hate). Now and today however, imo ( and i thought everyone else thought like this) its become the norm, ‘different’ people to what used to be the norm decades ago, dont stand out anymore, and shoudn’t!. That’s why i thought the younger generations would always be more accepting than their elders because they’ve grown up in a more diverse world.
That’s why it confuses me when people use the age thing, so i just wanted to understand it more?
Sarah, I admire you for wanting to understand this. I am certainly not an expert but I have lived a loooonngg time and have seen some things improve but slowly. That is the nature of human beings–they usually take a long time for changes in their thinking to occur–some are never able to change.
Yes, the modern world is quite different and technology has really changed the world and speeded things up. But the thing is that technology doesn’t have feelings and thoughts–humans have those and it takes a lot longer for those to be changed. Humans are not machines and we cannot just download a new program and have an immediate update.
One of the main things I have trouble with these days is that so many people do claim to be tolerant but in actuality, they are only tolerant if your ideas match theirs. They will not even consider that maybe there is another side to an issue. And their debates with those they don’t agree with disintegrate into name-calling and even physical violence. I actually see many areas in which our culture seems to be declining rather than improving.
I am still working in education as a substitute teacher in middle school and high school so I still have quite a bit of contact with young people. I have seen many changes over the decades that I have been in education. I see the best and the worst but I pray a lot that I will be a good example to all of them. It breaks my heart to see the path that some of these kids are on but they are convinced that they are right and no one is going to tell them differently.
There is an old expression “when the rubber meets the road” — it means that oftentimes people can talk a good game but when they are put into a situation, you see whether they really own their beliefs or if it is all talk. Some of the BB houseguests are great examples of this. Andy can say that he “loves” everybody but his actions show something entirely different. Aaryn has said she is changing but we will be able to see if her actions match her words. Andy still doesn’t think he did anything wrong.
I am from the Deep South and some people assume all people there are horrible racists while people from other parts of the US are not. Well, over the past few decades, some of the worst racist events have happened outside of the South–e.g. in Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and Detroit. The big exodus from the south by black people has actually reversed and more are moving south than north. So I do have hope that things are going to continue to get worked out but it will not be immediate–it will take time. Technology may speed up communication but people have to take in the information and decide if they have been mistaken about things they have long believed or if they are willing to look at another point of view. In my case, however, I do still believe in the old-fashioned idea that some things are inherently right and some are inherently wrong so those will remain steadfast values for me.
Again, I don’t know your age and anything much about you but I do admire your desire to understand.
Excuse me but I keep thinking of other things I meant to say–my apologies to other posters–feel free to skip over my posts.
You mentioned the use of social media and how you would think that it would make people more accepting and understanding of others. May I mention I few problems I have with social media. Obviously I love being on this site but I would love even better actually sitting around and talking with the people who post here. You can then see the person and can hear the tone of what they are saying–that often gets misinterpreted if you aren’t communicating face-to-face. And some things need long discussion and a lot of social media only allows very short responses, the best example bring Twitter. Don’t get me wrong–they are fun and have their place–but they can lead to awful misunderstanding and nasty fights that could be clarified if it were an in-person communication.
And bullying and lying is made easier if you do it on Facebook or twitter. Social media has also made it easier for wonderful characters like pedophiles to carry out their sick fantasies and destroy other people.
As an old fogey, I would rank in order of preference: in person communication, talking on the phone on the phone, a real letter (is there still such a thing :)?) e-mail, texting, twitter and whatever else allows fewer characters than twitter.
I always get a laugh but also find it a little sad when I see a couple of young people sitting in the same room but only communicating through texting. I wonder if someday in the future, babies will be born with a tongue and ears and no fingers, only thumbs. Ok, that was supposed to be joke.
Actually being physically present with people allows us to get to know them and hopefully understand them–we may end up not liking them but our judgment will be based upon really getting to know them and not just basing our opinion on some fleeting contact on social media.
Please excuse my ramblings–as you may have guessed, I am not on twitter.
Tessa, first i’d like to thank you for taking the time to answer my question i really appreciate it. To answer your question im 26 yrs old, i come from a middle eastern background but i live in the uk ( have been for just under 10yrs) currently as a junior lawyer.
I completely understand and share your frustration for excessive technology and social media as im not a big tech geek myself. In fact this is my first time ever coming on to a blog like this and participating but ive thoroughly enjoyed it! ( which maybe explains my never ending long posts and rambling lol) .
The struggle i have putting such behavior down to age is not necessarily just down to the technology issue you mentioned but more to do with globalization, i thought that our generations are more exposed to diversity and the rest of the world more than those before us, and so i would’ve assumed that based on that the younger generations would be more tolerant. However i see your what you mean, it’s good to see another perspective, especially from someone with a bit more experience under their wings
With regards to the point you made about stereotyping people based on what part of the states they’re from , i completely agree with you, unfortunately i’m ashamed to admit that being on the outside in i have made that mistake before. However the more people you come across in life the more they make you see the error of your ways; always always give people a chance when you meet them and try hard not to form opinions straight away. I used to omit details of my background just so im not judged on the spot and stereotyped. I have been a victim of racism and prejudice enough times to know how low it makes you feel, that’s why it feels personal anytime i see anyone from any background or race being mistreated. At first i made the mistake of holding anger inside and ive realised that is what leads to hate and racism, that’s why minorities find it easy to stereotype as well-the anger from mistreatment just builds up, but as you mentioned on another post, same way all black people (or any other race) don’t all think/act the same the same applies to white people. I frankly believe that media plays a huge role in playing with people’s minds and brainwashing through news/tv planting these stereotypes in our minds without us even realising! Unfortunately the rest of the fault lies with us the people for going along with things, believing anything that could be twisted ect without having enough information or entitlement to make such judgements.
Sometimes its hard to believe that at 2013/14 we are still having discussions and debates over race and diversity. However like you said, it still exists and sometimes getting worse in some cases.
Ok i should stop blabbing lol i feel like i’ve written an essay.
Thanks tessa!
Sarah, I am sorry I did not respond to you earlier but this has been a very busy week for me. You sound like a wonderful, thoughtful young woman and I am so sorry you have been the victim of racism. Yes, it is something that is still here but every little step forward counts–kind of like the Colorado River wearing down the rock and creating the Grand Canyon– but certainly we hope it doesn’t take that long! 😉 I agree with you that the media always seems to want to focus on the negative and this certainly feeds racism and prejudice of all kinds. There are even certain people (I will not mention any names here but most are well-known) who use any incident of racism or even possible racism for their own aggrandizement and publicity but rarely notice anything positive. They are always ready to cry “racism” but never seem to offer any solutions. And the media gives them plenty of attention and helps keep things stirred up.
Hope you stick around and keep posting. Best wishes for much success in your career and in your life. In my opinion, the world needs a lot more young people like you. 🙂
Todd, I know this is a late reply but just wanted to say you are so correct. I mentioned that my parents both changed–it took over half their lifetimes but it did happen, and I celebrate that. Aaryn is a lot younger than they were when they began changing their ways and beliefs. I don’t think we ever grow too old to be beyond redemption.
I agree, being from the South I hear allot of folks tell me that the South is uneducated. So So wrong. I have a 4 year degree in finance, and I assist allot of Fortune 500 companies daily with their receivables. Do not judge, it is so wrong. We learn new things everyday, and with the Praise of god our country will someday change. I love all the post here. Thanks Tessa and Sarah. Have a great day
I do hope she is sincere and that she has had her eyes opened. At least, she didn’t use that “taken out of context” excuse to try and justify what the things she said. I am so tired of that “cop-out!”
I agree Tessa.
Sarah, I guess I didn’t express it too well. Yes, she has said those things but she has at least gone on to talk about how she wants to learn better and how Candice helped her to realize what she did (and Candice says the same thing–that Aaryn was really ignorant rather than racist and Candice believes she really does want to be educated). Of course, it is always possible that Aaryn is still lying but I always want to give someone the benefit of the doubt and wish them well in their attempts to become a better person.
I contrast this with people like Andy and Spencer who always use the excuse that what they said was “taken out of context” and end it there–no indication that they will actually look at what they said and realize that maybe they do have some problems they need to work on. All they say is “I am sorry” but they offer us no hope that they will do a self-examination. I think this is why Candice is pretty sure she will never be a friend of GM.
Meant to add that I agree with you about her not yet understanding the depth of her actions but I will take Candice’s (who was Aaryn’s main target) word that Aaryn is at least willing to be open to a new way of thinking–the cure for ignorance is education.
I speak from personal experience when I say that as I saw my own parents change their views about other races during the course of their lifetimes and I was so proud of them! In fact, after my mother died, my father joined a hospice support group, and the person he became closest to in that group was a black man. So I have had personal experience with the changes that are possible.
Forgive and “get a life”.
I really hope big brother does not bring back Amanda. McCrae better open his eyes and see that Amanda was only using him. I hope they bring back Aaryn and McCrae to see if they matured and learnt anything from this show. If they bring back Andy I will not watch it. Would be good to see Howard Candice Aaryn and McCrae working as a team in a future show Show should also bring in some older players. Why not bring back Dick
@jacqueline
Why does BB have to bring back anybody? I been watching since season 1, I missed seasons 8,9 & 14 & I don’t like it when they bring people back. I think there should be new people every year.
BB 3 was the best BB, there will never be a BB to top BB 3, EVER.
BB should never bring back winners. But i guess my mindset is different from people on this site cause i would never suggest bringing bsck a racist. Thats mindnumbing.
I agree..new people each time to keep it interesting please!
Never bring back Amanda or Rachel please.
I was disappointed. Not sure why-Aaryn has been a social disappointment all season long.
Remember…when confronted by Amanda she had ZERO remorse for actions and even said, “I wish I could care…but I just don’t”.
She had TWO publicist greet her as soon as she walked off stage and they tagged along behind her throughout her interviews. When Michael Yo asked how she felt about her agency dropping her she all but called him a liar (way to go publicists).
I read somewhere that she said that they (Zephyr) weren’t really that great and the working relationship had been on the rocks for some time.
– Don’t know if trashing your former employer is the way to get a new job.
She followed it up by saying that she already had meetings lined up with 6 new modeling agencies so it didn’t matter. I also read that she mentioned something about writing a book.
I hope that she learned something from this experience but I fear that the only thing she’s learning is how to spin bad publicity.
LOL I fear that you are right, however I DO hope she learned something. I would be interested to see her again, just to see…
I think she’s just a clueless young girl who had no idea how badly she was making herself look to everyone. I honestly think that she’s not really a racist, but just a young girl who made a few bad choices in her actions. I think she’s realized that she can’t just do or say whatever she wants without paying the consequences. Anyone can change if they truly want to and I do think she has learned a valuable lesson.
Sorry but Aaron is racist. Shes not dumb & clueless, she knew exactly what she was doing.
Jonte,
Have you ever entertained the thought that perhaps similligan and others who disagree with you might be correct and you might be wrong or even partially wrong. None of us know Aaryn, including you, and to make absolute judgments about her is pure prejudice. I was appalled by her words and actions toward Candice and Helen but I am willing to believe her victim Candice that she is capable of being educated and changing. And that all happened when she was in the jury house before her public relations people were even on the scene.
You made the statement that you can look in her eyes and tell she is a racist and yet isn’t it correct that you have never met her in real life and talked with her. And you have never met Candice either. I know that you have almost certainly been a victim of racism and, whether you believe it or not, I feel awful that you have been hurt that way. I pray that it never happens to you again. But please know that, just as all black people don’t think alike, not all of us white folk do either.
God bless you.
Tessa, you said what I’ve been trying to communicate so much better than I. Thanks!
Thank you, Lilly. I think you have done just as good a job in expressing those same ideas. I hope the post is taken in the spirit in which it was written. I really am terribly sorry that Jonte has suffered the results of racism. I just wish that she could come to believe that some of us really are very ashamed of all the cruelty and injustice resulting from racism.
Sadly, Tessa, your thoughtful words have likely fallen on deaf ears – or willingly blind eyes….
Jonte, I hope you take a moment to really read and digest what Tessa has said to you. Read it and really hear her without just going on the attack. You say you see evil in Aaryn’s eyes. Well Jonte, I don’t know you either but I can feel your rage right through my screen. Like Tessa, I’m guessing that you have been a victim of racism and I’m saddened by that. I hope that one day you can help to change things but you can’t do that by lashing out at everyone. You can’t get rid of racism by being a racist yourself. You are more like Aaryn than you know. (I’m pretty sure you will give me a verbal bashing for saying that but I’m a big girl, I can take it). Neither one of you can see any view but your own and neither of you are quite ready to hear the stuff you need to hear. When you are willing to listen and share instead of automatically attacking, your life will change.
Wish there was a thumbs up button, SuzyQ…! Thanks.
SuzyQ, thank you so much for the kind support and the words of wisdom you offered. I hope they will find their mark–many people would benefit from the sound advice given in your post.
The videos only play in the US thanks.
Have you tried watching them at http://www.cbs.com ?
Totally agree as she is the only one that does seem to own up to it and agree that age does make you stupid and ignorant especially if you have idiots like Andy teaching you. I love that her and Candice became friends in Jury and that both of them let go of the game unlike the other pigs in the house.
Me too, Shannon! The other HG that sounds as if she has seen the light is Kaitlyn who in her interview seems to be saying she misjudged Elissa and should have acted differently while she was in the house.
I don’t know why Aryan (sp) was so embarrassed by Jeff’s gift. It was right on the money. She should say it ten times every morning for a month. “My Bad”, “My Bad”, “My Bad”, etc. Yeah! Your bad!
LOL Hi Kay, I thought this old dog was put down. Are you on the Survivor site? I miss chatting with everyone each day. Kinda makes my day here at work go very, very slow. 🙂
Hey, Carol! I miss the every day “talking,” too! Luckily I have been getting lots of substitute teaching jobs with good kids so have been keeping busy. My favorite “reality” competition is “Amazing Race” so that has been fun–already, there are a couple of pairs that I would love to see leave! Of course, one of the pairs has the “express pass” so it will take more than one awful leg of the trip to get rid of them. And the Afghani brothers have a definite superiority complex but they are starting to fight with each other so maybe….I can only hope! If you are watching the race, my favs are the two good ole boys with beards–seem like nice guys and one needs money for medical expenses so I am hoping they do well. I also like the pro football guys–seems like they are having a good time! I haven’t been as thrilled with Survivor but maybe it will get better now with Colton gone–I was sorry to see John go, however.
WOW Tess, I want those two gone already also. I also Brandon and Adam. I also like Tim and Danny. The football players are Chester and Ephraim I like them too. The rest well I can do without them. Survivor has to get better, dang it has so far been boaring.
Well hello all survivor on line buddies. I hope you all are having a good day. Fall is here this morning it was only 58 outside and the high here in SC 66.. A bit cool with high winds. Enjoy your day all.
I am jealous, Carol! It is finally cool (actually cold) in the mornings here in south central Texas but it is still heating up to “sweating” weather as the day goes on–I am more than ready for some all day cool weather! And we haven’t had much more rain–pray for our drought to end!
Tessa, good morning. We had 2 inches of rain on Sunday. This morning again cool at 54. I really do not like the cooler weather being from the south (FL). I like it a bit warmer. Yesterday I had the heat on. My husband went nuts, lol he is from the NC Mountains. He said how and the heck did you live in the Mountains for 10 years, I said I never went outside. hahahhaaha well I hope all of you have a wonderful day.
